WhatsApp Status Video Is Rotated or Sideways — How to Fix It

June 28, 2026

A familiar problem: you shot a vertical video, post it to WhatsApp status — and it turns sideways or goes horizontal. It's not your camera: it's how WhatsApp handles rotation metadata. Here's why, and how to post in the correct orientation.

Why your status video gets rotated

When a phone records video, it doesn't always physically rotate the frame — it often records the image as-is and stores the intended orientation as a separate flag in the file's metadata (a rotation tag). Your phone's player reads that flag and shows the video correctly.

When you post to status, WhatsApp re-encodes the video and often handles that flag wrong: it either ignores it or bakes in the rotation the wrong way. The result is a clip that looked vertical on your phone but lies sideways or upside down in status.

What usually does NOT help

  • Rotating your phone while viewing — on other people's devices it still shows rotated.
  • Re-saving the video in your gallery — the rotation flag usually stays the same.
  • Reshooting — doesn't always help: the problem is in the metadata, not how you held the phone.
The root cause is a mismatch between the rotation flag in metadata and how WhatsApp interprets it when recompressing status. The reliable fix is to bake the correct orientation into the video itself in advance.

How to fix the orientation

The working approach is to prepare the video so the rotation is applied to the actual frames, not left as a separate flag. Then WhatsApp has nothing to "rotate": the video is already physically upright, and it displays correctly in status.

MiStatus does this automatically together with status-format prep: it converts the clip to vertical 1080p with the correct orientation and bitrate, so status won't recompress it or lay it sideways. Upload your video on mistatus.top or in the @mi_status_bot Telegram bot, get the finished clip right inside WhatsApp, and post it. The first videos are free.
