The current limit is 90 seconds (1 minute 30 seconds) for a single status segment. WhatsApp raised it over time — first from 30 seconds to 60, and now to 90. If a video is longer than 90 seconds, the messenger will either offer to trim it or split it into several separate status segments shown back to back.

Format, resolution and aspect ratio for status
Length is only half the story — status also recompresses video. For the best result a status clip should be 1080p (1920×1080), MP4/H.264, vertical 9:16 aspect ratio, with a standard frame rate and a high enough bitrate. When the file already matches what status expects, WhatsApp is far less likely to downgrade it.
